NEWPORT AWARDS PARTY

 

DIGNITARIES:

Commodore Goat Island YC: Charlie Wright (unable to attend)

Chairman of the Rhode Island State Yachting Committee: Robin Wallace (unable to attend)

 

Recognize those from the Bermuda 1-2 fraternity that have passed away recently

·                     George Pike – The 2011 Bermuda One-Two is in his honor.  He ran this race 1979 thru 1987 and 1991, helped me out in 2003 and 2005 with safety checks and with the basic knowledge of the race.

·                     Mark Chramiec – 1983 thru 1991 and 1995, fellow Newport YC member

·                     Bob Adams – 1989 and 1991, had a dream to do the Bermuda 1-2 one more time on his Open 40 he built in Russia but cancer kept him from doing it

·                     Robert Wenzel – crewed for Ray Renaud and a big influence of offshore racing to our own Kristen Wenzel

·                     Rusty Dhyum – 2007 and 2009, the handy man from Maine.

 

We had 10 new skippers this year (some as you’ll see have trophies) and more new crew.

 

BERMUDA ONE-TWO TROPHIES GIVEN IN NEWPORT (suggested order of presentation) :

BEST DH LEG ELAPSED TIME FINISHES IN EACH CLASS (keeper and bottle of Thomas Tews)

        1st place skipper and crew only in each class and skippers also get bottle of Tews as keeper for:

        Awarded to the person who best exemplifies the true spirit of the Bermuda One-Two, as nominated by the fleet skippers and selected by the Event Committee

Skipper’s Representative presented a picture of Tobacco Bay (where stung by a Portuguese Man Of War) to Roy Guay from all the skippers.
